NYT Prompt 011: Gifts

Prompt: What is the best gift you’ve ever given or received?

I’m going to be completely honest here: I don’t make a habit of keeping track of what people give me or what I give other people. Keeping tabs on gifts defeats the purpose of giving whole-heartedly in my opinion. There are far too many things in life that are way more important than what I consider to be an infantile manner of “keeping count.” If I see someone in need, or I feel someone deserves a particular gift, I do whatever I am capable of doing within my own power to fulfill that need or wish.

My mother would probably describe me to others as the kind of person that would give away the very shirt on my back. If it were legal for me to run around topless, she would be right. When I have items I need to get rid that are of value, such as computers, phones, or game systems, I try to find someone who cannot afford them, yet desperately wants them. I’d rather give things to people than sell them, honestly.

As for the best gift I have ever received? Again, I don’t really keep track but from what I can recall, it would be a tie between my old ASUS G73Jh, which I have since given away, and the books that my boyfriend spoils me with. He has, since we began dating, purchased for me a first edition, second print of The Silence of the Lambs and first edition, first prints of Hannibal and Red Dragon.
